International Festival

This weekend we spent time at an International festival in Koriyama, where we painted children’s faces. It was a way to talk to Japanese people and raise awareness of multiculturalism. It was so much fun that by the end of it I was nearly dragging cute little Japanese kids to paint their face.

In one of my journals today, a 3rd year high school student wrote:

Almost all students wear a black school uniform. What do you think about it? Do you think it is like an army?

Granted it is an English select class, that is a very deep comment to be making in a foreign language. I was both impressed and depressed by this question. Unfortunately it is something I have thought myself before. The school uniforms do look like military attire, and a typical Japanese lesson is very much teacher centered with a lot of choral repetition from the students. English is broken down into a subject to be studied and learned as opposed to a communication tool which is why I can't blame students for having no motivation to learn English.

Nice blog man!

That's a pretty cute thing of the girl to say regarding the military-like school uniforms. I myself have never thought that they looked military as much as they looked Sailor Moon-ish. But like all things they do in Japan, it's very much group-centric. Either they are super-organized into a group, or run frantically in chaos (kamekaze).

hahah, yeah very true. Its really not the best thing to help with individuality and personal growth however. It is not uncommon for adults to still live with their parents 24-30, until they get married or i guess eventually move out. It is a much different culture than western culture in that sense.
